Christy delivering a presentation

Christy presenting at the G+ Stakeholder Forum, 2025

Christy Yohanes, G+ Japan Chapter Chair, brings a wealth of expertise to his role. Currently, he is a Senior HSE Manager and QHSSE Section Manager, with over 10 years of experience in the energy industry, spanning upstream oil & gas and offshore wind. Christy has been involved with G+ since 2021, when he joined Ørsted, and has been the Japan Chair since 2024. He is now with JERA Nex bp. His intention is to unite every winner of the Japan Auction Round 2 projects in H&S management, to effectively manage the H&S risks to ALARP.

Professional  journey

Christy is Indonesian with an academic background in engineering physics. He started his career in the energy industry as an HSE professional in 2015, in a Japanese exploration and production company (INPEX). On his first assignment at an LNG production plant within Japan, the plant had a long operation history and at the time the company was rolling out a process safety management framework. It was there that he realised the greatest challenge of being a HSE professional is not technical expertise, but the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse disciplines and encourage them to embed core HSE principles into their work.  Christy believes diversity is key to developing HSE skills, as the concept of safety is strongly related to the local culture. He spent time in Venezuela and Australia in HSE positions, looking after occupational safety and contractor safety management. He has been heavily involved with IOGP's groups where they analysed incident data, obtained trends, and formulated ways forward. These experiences greatly increased his skills to communicate with people from different backgrounds. After COVID, Christy transitioned to offshore wind, first with Ørsted and then to JERA Co (now JERA Nex bp).

Vision for APAC: Driving progress through the G+ Japan Chapter

Christy’s goal is to contribute to the development of offshore wind HSE management in APAC. Expanding on this, he said:

“Japan, Korea and Taiwan do not have legacy offshore energy exploration industries, which leads to gaps in HSE management practice in both onshore and offshore. However, with the willingness to identify and address the gap, there is potential to quickly grow and mature.”

Christy clarified that this cannot be achieved by an individual organisation. He recognises that a platform to unite stakeholders (developers, service providers, regulatory), such as the G+, is essential to spark collaboration and drive the movement forward.

International perspective into domestic requirements

Building on similar discussions across APAC to bridge international practices, G+ conducted a gap analysis comparing Korean statutory medical requirements for offshore wind workers with relevant international offshore standards, such as OEUK. The report identifies key areas of alignment and divergence to aid industry understanding and discussion. It aims to inform dialogue among industry stakeholders and support a shared understanding of where challenges and opportunities may lie should further alignment be explored in the future. The report is scheduled to be launched in Q1 2026.

G+ Japan Safety Workshop – Marine Safety – 30th June

In alignment with the APAC Emergency Response workstream and ongoing discussions within the G+ Japan Chapter, G+ will host a Japan Safety Workshop focused on Marine Safety. The workshop will also mark the launch of the Japanese translations of key G+ guidelines, including Emergency Response and Marine Coordination, supporting broader accessibility and local application of international good practice.

As activities grow in the APAC region, the G+ will be hosting a dedicated Forum in Japan, 1st July 2026 (read more here). The session will provide an opportunity for developers, industry partners, and stakeholders to exchange perspectives on offshore wind H&S priorities in Japan, and to continue dialogue on how international experience can be meaningfully reflected in local contexts.
