Industry comes together to Stand Up for Safety
The second annual SafetyOn Stand Up for Safety week took place from 20th – 24th January. A simple initiative with a huge impact, Stand Up for Safety Week is all about promoting a positive health and safety culture, helping to raise awareness about the potential risks and hazards employees may encounter in the workplace, and encouraging employees to adopt safe work practices.
Background
SafetyOn, the health and safety organisation for the onshore wind industry, launched Stand Up for Safety Week in January 2024. Following the success of the initiative, it has become an annual event in SafetyOn’s calendar.
How it works
Organisations conduct a Stand Up for Safety moment by creating time to discuss hazards working onshore and preventative measures that could be taken to reduce the risk to health and safety. The day, time and duration given to discuss hazards and preventative measures is determined by the organisation. Prior to Stand Up for Safety Week, SafetyOn members are issued briefing packs with example topics they can discuss with their teams during their Stand Up for Safety moment.
Each briefing pack is focused on a specific topic and a video showing an incident is presented. Viewers are asked four key questions:
- What happened?
- Why did it happen?
- What did you learn?
- What would you ask yourself or your crew?
Who gets involved
In 2025, owners and operators, operational and maintenance, service provider/contractors, original equipment manufacturers and other stakeholders from across the wind industry took part, posting their Teams’ Stand Up for Safety moments on social media.
Importance of the initiative
Through increased awareness and understanding, Stand Up for Safety Week can help reduce the number of accidents and incidents, protect employees and boost workplace productivity.
SafetyOn’s mission is to provide advice, share best industry practice, promote innovation and create positive change in the UK and Ireland’s onshore wind industry – this is achieved through initiatives such as Stand Up for Safety Week where we see a network of industry professionals coming together to promote a strong, sustainable and continually improving health and safety culture.
