Vessel/WTG Interaction

Aiming to deliver a GPG on safe vessel transit in an offshore wind farm, this workstream was initiated following increasing incidents of WTG colliding with vessels when WTGs re-activate unexpectedly. With a focus on communication, it will consider all types of WTG as well as vessel variation.

Manual Handling

A collaboration with SafetyOn, this workstream is producing a video campaign to raise awareness and provide mitigating strategies to reduce manual handling related incidents in both on and offshore wind farms.

Floating Offshore Wind

This workstream has previously looked at determining whether the motions experienced on floating wind turbines are likely to impact technicians e.g. motion illness, motion induce fatigue, cognitive function. The motion dynamics impact on personnel topic scoping review report was produced by University of Portsmouth and published in 2024. The workstream is currently engaged in discussions regarding the next steps for addressing remaining floating offshore wind topics.

Surveying Buoys

The health and safety implications of using large buoys in the offshore wind industry was raised during a G+ Europe FG meeting and has also been seen in the incident data. This workstream will look at the presence and impacts of existing H&S hazards on the workforce and operations, advising H&S guidance that can be implemented, and referencing any existing guidance on buoy H&S.

Severe Weather

The aim of this workstream is to identify standard/accepted best practices for work performance when faced with severe weather conditions. Extreme weather conditions to be included are heat, cold, lightning and strong winds (including hurricanes/typhoons/cyclones), with a globally applicable GPG as the final deliverable.

Welfare

Following an increase in concerns for the welfare facilities available for offshore wind technicians, this G+ workstream will study existing practices and explore possibilities to enhance these provisions. This study, with the potential for a GPG in Phase 2, will explore sanitation, washing, rest and mess facilities.
